Banff on foot
Banff is a town you can hike from, not just a town you drive out of. Keep the car parked: the walks that start at the end of the main street cover mountains, a river, a waterfall, and more elk than you will know what to do with. We shot the trip two ways, digital and a parallel roll of film, and the town suits both.
Tunnel Mountain before breakfast
Locals climb it the way other towns walk the dog. The switchbacks take under an hour, and the top opens onto the valley: the river braiding through wetlands, ranges stacked behind ranges, the town small and quiet below.

A main street with a mountain at the end
Banff Avenue runs straight at Cascade Mountain, which makes even the errands scenic. The town is compact: coffee, a bakery stop, and you are back on a trailhead inside ten minutes.

The residents
The elk were here first and act like it. We met them grazing at the edge of town, indifferent to traffic and photographers alike. Keep your distance, especially in autumn, and let the long lens do the approaching.

Stay past the day crowds: the light on Rundle at the end of the day is the show.
